Take Advantage of Discounts, Sales, and Seasonal Clearance

Why do stores offer discounts, sales, and clearance and make less money? This is a good question. Believe it or not! Stores benefit by offering consumers products that are lower priced even though they are making less profit. This may seem strange, but there are good reasons why stores want you to take advantage of discounts, sales, and seasonal clearance. Read these reasons below to understand why stores want you to save money.

Discounts

There are many reasons why stores offer discounts. They may want to target a particular group of people such as seniors, students, and military professionals. Sometimes, stores want to attract new customers that normally do not shop there. By attracting certain types of customers, stores will benefit by expanding their customer base. In the future, stores will have new customers, which mean more profits. If you are a student, senior, military professional, new customer, or qualify for a discount, you should take advantage of being added to their customer based. After all, the stores will save you money and later, offer new products that cater to your needs.

Sales

Sales happen throughout the year, so stores can get rid of overstocked inventory, overpriced items, or unpopular products. The reason for this is it cost too much money for stores to keep large inventory of products. When you purchase products on sale, you not only help the store clean out their inventory, but you are also saving money. It is a win-win situation. Stores win by getting more room for new merchandise, and you win by paying less. Remember only buy if you plan on using it. Otherwise, you will be wasting money.

Seasonal Clearance

The reason why seasonal clearances exists is because stores what to get rid of out of seasonal products and make room for new seasonal products. You can take advantage of the end of season clearance by saving 40% to 80% off of the original prices. Some great stuff to buy during the end of season clearance are clothes (after the season), holiday candy (after the holidays), Halloween costumes (after Halloween), Christmas merchandise (after Christmas), heaters and snow blowers (in the spring), air conditioners (in the fall). If you don’t mind waiting for another year to get better use out of your purchase, then seasonal sales are great for you.

Sometimes, discounts, sales, and seasonal clearances are not advertised. You have three options of finding out these money saving opportunities. First, you can go to the store in person or via the internet to find these sales, which is time consuming. Secondly, you can sign up to be on a bunch of stores email lists and get a lot of junk mail to delete, which is irritating. Shoppers’ Christmases Comes Early With Sales Starting in December

In the “good old days” stores shut their doors on the festivities at the end of Christmas Eve and opened them again on Boxing Day, or even the day after (heavens above), with their brand new sparkly January sale offers. However in the 21st century, we are seeing a new phenomenon, with high street stores introducing their Sales mid-way through the festive rush or even earlier.

But what has brought about that change – surely stores would want to sell their goods at full price when demand is so high? Some of it must be down to the highly profitable, yet highly competitive Christmas gift markets. Retailers these days openly admit that their Christmas trading figures can make or break their annual budgets, with some saying that Christmas accounts for a huge percentage of of their year’s sales figures.

That in itself is high pressure stuff for the high street stores – but there’s more. In the past few years we’ve seen consumers leaving it later and later in the year to start their Christmas shopping, and on top of that there’s the growing trend in internet shopping – when the stakes are so high, it’s got to be a nail biting time for the number crunchers in those head office towers.

So these days we see sales starting mid-season, particularly in fashion, hoping to tempt those shoppers in. And now, the online retailers, often perceived as being cheaper than the high street already, are also jumping on the bandwagon, with a flurry of early sales being seen. For example, boots.com is starting its January sale on 20th December with up to 50% off some big brand names across several product ranges including health and beauty products, photographic accessories and toys.

It could be argued that some people reminisce for the traditional January sale – this self-confessed bargain hunter for one misses the drama of the bygone era of sales; the middle-of-the-night queuing, the mad scramble to get the best items in the right size (anyone remember those infamous pictures of the Harrods Sale on national news?) and the satisfaction of snaffling a bonafide bargain from under the nose of some other shopper.

But, let’s take off the rose-tinted glasses – it has to be said that these more frequent mid-season sales can only be good news for the Christmas shopper – after all, there’s nothing more frustrating than buying something full price on Christmas Eve, only to find it at half price or less just a couple of days later.

So, calling all bargain hunters – pick up your tote and get out onto the streets, but if all else fails, sit back, relax and let your fingers do the sale shopping online.
